One of the last things a woman might think to worry about when giving birth is whether her car is safe in the hospital parking lot. And she especially shouldn’t have to worry that the child’s father might steal it.

Unfortunately for one woman in Kentucky, she apparently should have. Because the 37-year-old father of the child she was giving birth to allegedly stole her car during the delivery.

According to a Pikeville Police Department arrest warrant, the man visited Pikeville Medical Center to see the birth of his child. WDRB News reported that the police told him he couldn’t be there due to the hospital’s visitation policies. The woman had reportedly offered to let him warm up in her car rather than standing out in the cold.

Security footage at the hospital showed him sitting in the passenger seat of his ex-girlfriend’s car while she gave birth. Then, the footage shows him getting out of the passenger side of the vehicle, getting in on the driver’s side, and driving away.

He told her ‘it was none of her business’ where he had taken her car

Then, while someone was searching for the man, they discovered that the woman’s car was missing. When she called him to find out where her car had gone, he allegedly told her “it was none of her business where her vehicle was” and hung up.

“Upon arrival, the officer made contact with the victim, and at that point, they had reported their vehicle had been stolen,” said Tiason Lockridge, Pikeville Police Department public information officer.

The Pikeville Police Department confirmed that the victim was the car’s owner and began searching for the man who took it. The next day, a state trooper found him driving the car in Paintsville. Authorities took him into custody and charged him with receiving stolen property valued between $1,000 and $10,000 and theft by unlawful taking, also valued between $1,000 and $10,000.
