70-Year-Old NASCAR Legend Ken Schrader Scores Win at Wild West Shootout in Arizona
70-year-old Ken Schrader still knows how to get to victory lane after all these years. Saturday night, the NASCAR legend claimed the feature win in the X-Modified division during the Rio Grande Waste Services Wild West Shootout presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts at Central Arizona Raceway.
The racing icon, who won the sportsman championship at Lake Hill Speedway in Valley Park, Missouri, all the way back in 1971, started seventh on the grid in the 25-lap feature. He ended the night beating 19th starter Jake Smith to the finish line and snagging the top prize of the night in the X-Modified division. Christy Barnett, Cole Suckow, Lucas Rodin, Curtis Stieh, Scott Bintz, Parker Anderson, Dakota Girard, and Josh Cain rounded out the top 10.
Schrader has won in just about every type of race car he has driven. He was the 1982 USAC Silver Crown Series Champion and the 1983 USAC Thunder & Lightning Sprint Car Series Champion. He is a 4-Crown Nationals Midget winner, a 4-Crown Nationals Silver Crown Winner, a three-time Copper World Classic Midget Winner, and a two-time Copper World Classic Silver Crown Winner. Schrader was also the 1985 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Rookie of the Year and won the 1988 Talladega DieHard 500, his first of four wins on the circuit.
Bobby Pierce wins $25,000 in the Wild West Shootout Late Model Finale
Ricky Thornton, Jr. bagged $38,000 for winning the 20th Annual Wild West Shootout opener in Arizona. In the final round, Bobby Pierce earned the $25,000 top prize. Pierce took home a total of $51,500, including lap money and bonus cash.
FloRacing reports Pierce survived multiple midrace threats from Hudson O’Neal, but still led all but three laps in the main event on Sunday. It was Pierce’s 17th career victory at the annual event.
Pierce was followed to the line by Jonathan Davenport, O’Neal, Tyler Erb, and Dustin Sorensen. Rounding out the top 10 were Chase Junghans, Ethan Dotson, Cade Dillard, Drake Troutman, and Brandon Sheppard.

The night before Pierce’s big win, Emerson Axsom of Franklin, Indiana, took home the title at the 40th annual Chili Bowl Nationals powered by NOS Energy Drink. Axsom took the lead from defending champion Kyle Larson early in the race. He then had to hold off the field on a green-white-checkered restart to win the 55-lap main event.
Kevin Thomas Jr., Hank Davis, Logan Seavey, and Briggs Danner rounded out the top five. They were followed by Daison Pursley, Cannon McIntosh, Christopher Bell, Spencer Bayston, and Tanner Thorson.
