You may have noticed that you can’t buy a Jeep Wrangler 4xe or Grand Cherokee 4xe right now. That’s because the plug-in hybrid Jeep SUVs have an engine problem without a solution. New models won’t be sold until they can be fixed.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe has a stop sale due to engine problems

Stellantis has quietly removed the Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe from its configurator. That means you can’t order a new PHEV Jeep model at the moment.

These models have quietly been placed under a stop sale due to an ongoing engine problem. According to Stellantis, the problem is related to a potential fire risk. Machining debris may have been left over during production.

But the problem could also be related to the faulty battery cells. There is less of a fire risk when the battery is depleted of charge. So, in the meantime, don’t charge your 4xe and park away from structures. An internal investigation discovered 19 fires related to the issue.

About 228,000 Wrangler 4xe models from 2020-2025 and 92,000 Grand Cherokee 4xe models from 2022-2024 are included in the recall.

Stellantis is still working on a fix, meaning there is still no solution to this issue. Also, new models can’t be sold until a remedy has been provided.

Once the SUVs can be fixed, the stop sale will be lifted. However, it’s unclear how long this process of discovering a solution will take.

Owners at risk will be notified when they can schedule service when the remedy becomes available. So, continue sitting pretty and don’t plug your 4xe in. Until then, the future of Jeep 4xe SUVs feels uncertain.
