A black BMW SUV crashed into the lobby of the Shrewsbury Police Station in Massachusetts just after 2 p.m. on Monday. According to police, the SUV driver may have done it on purpose.

Police took the male driver of the 2022 BMW X6 SUV into custody and then transported him to a nearby hospital for treatment. No passengers were in the vehicle, and no one else reported injuries.

Shrewsbury Police Chief Kevin Anderson said police believe the crash was intentional. CBS News reports that Anderson said that police know the man, but they had not dealt with him since 2022. We do not have a motive at this time,” said Anderson.

The SUV crashed through a barricade set up in front of the building, then through the double doors

“We actually put two pylons out there to prevent people from hitting the building,” Anderson said. “Went through that, went through the front door, actually two doors, went through the lobby, and then went through the wall of the dispatch center.”

The SUV crashed into the Shrewsbury Police Department dispatch center. Anderson said three dispatchers were working there at the time, “and they are very shaken up.”

“You just see two red blinking lights on a car that’s like tilted over through the front door of the police station. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s insane,” said Shrewsbury resident Tyler O’Keefe.

The driver of the SUV was charged with one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, one count of destruction of property over $1,200, and one count of reckless operation of a motor vehicle.
