Hyundai and Kia SUVs are harder to steal but thieves don’t care
I have good news and bad news for the owners of Hyundai and Kia models. These cars and SUVs are officially harder to steal, so enjoy a little peace of mind. The bad news is that thieves haven’t gotten the picture yet.
Thieves still target Hyundai and Kia models with security upgrades
How could anyone forget about the infamous Kia Boys? Their videos went viral for showing how to quickly steal Hyundai and Kia cars. Thefts of these cars and SUVs exploded.
The cars were sold without electronic immobilizers. An electric immobilizer prevents an engine from being started without the correct key or transponder chip to protect against being hotwired.
The Korean automaker took many steps to provide more security. They recruited police departments to help them hand out free steering wheel and tire locks. Then, the 2022 – 2024 models received anti-theft software updates.
According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), these steps have reduced crime. Frequency of theft claims for these vehicles has declined by 46% compared to 2023. Whole vehicle theft claims were reduced by 52% for models with the software updates.
But there is also an increase in vandalism claims. This could mean that the software is working, as the damage may have occurred during failed theft attempts.
While fewer cars are being stolen, they’re still being targeted and vandalized. However, coming out to find a damaged vehicle is probably better than realizing it’s missing.
Also, not every model qualifies for updated software. These still need to rely on extra safety measures, such as using security tools.
