Hyundai and Kia Recall 335,500 Cars for Fuel Fire Risk
Hyundai and its Kia sub-brand are recalling 335,500 vehicles. Hot exhaust components can rub against the fuel tank and melt a hole that lets gasoline leak out. Gasoline dripping onto the exhaust is a great way to start a fire—or reenact a Michael Bay explosion—so this recall matters. Here are the models affected:
- 2020–23 Hyundai Sonata sedans
- 2021–24 Kia K5 sedans
Every fuel tank has a one-way check valve. It lets gasoline flow into the fuel pump, but not back into the tank. This keeps the fuel lines pressurized and makes your car easier to start.
In these sedans, the check valve may be damaged. Air can slip into the fuel tank, causing it to expand just enough to rub against the nearby exhaust system.
Hyundai and Kia say they will identify all affected vehicles and notify owners by January 16, 2026. Dealers will inspect the cars, replace the entire fuel tank if needed, and update the engine control software—all for free.
This recall goes by Hyundai recall 286 and Kia recall SC356. Curious if your car is involved in any recalls? You can enter your VIN at NHTSA.gov.
