Hyundai data breach leaks SSNs and Driver’s Licenses

Some owners of Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia vehicles should keep a closer eye on their financial information. Unfortunately, a massive data breach has exposed Social Security Numbers and driver’s licenses.

That means drivers have a high risk of being targeted for identity theft and phishing scams. Hyundai AutoEver America, the an affiliate IT arm, became aware of a cyber incident that impacted its information technology on March 1st, 2025.

Law enforcement and outside cybersecurity investigators found that hackers breached the AutoEver America networks on February 22nd. The hackers maintained unauthorized access until March 2nd.

According to CyberNews, owners at risk were notified via mail starting on October 30th. The number of owners at risk is unclear. However, the enhanced IT services are integrated in over 2.7 cars in America.

The Massachusetts Officers of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation lists social security numbers and driver’s licenses as part of the compromised information. However, it’s unclear if hackers accessed other sensitive information.

What you need to do

If your information is at risk, monitor your financial accounts for any unusual activity. Immediately report any anomalies. Monitor your credit reports for any unauthorized transactions.

Also, enabling multi-factor authentication and only clicking on official links to Hyundai sites could prevent further risks. You can freeze your accounts as well.

According to Hyundai, you can enroll in a complimentary two-year credit monitoring service with Epiq Privacy Solutions. You have 30 days to enroll upon receiving your letter. Plus, you can contact Hyundai at 855-720-3727 for more information.
