The Honda CR-V is moving from Canada to Ohio
Honda is making some moves with its popular SUVs to skirt around new expensive tariffs. The brand seems prepared to move production of the Honda CR-V from Ontario, Canada to a facility in Ohio.
Honda CEO, Toshihiro Mibe, shared that HCM the Canadian CR-V for the United States, ELP will be produced instead in the United States.
According to Driving CA, HCM is Honda Canada Manufacturing and ELP is the East Liberty Plant in Ohio. So, Mibe basically said that CR-V SUVs that are intended for sale in America will be built in Ohio to avoid tariffs.
About 200,000 CR-V models are built in Canada each year. However, in 2024, American drivers only purchased about 55,000 units.
Models intended to be sold in Canada will still be made there. Also, Honda isn’t planning to reduce its production. It will fill the 55,000 model gap by building more models in Canada to ship to other countries.
This adjustment levels Honda’s flexible manufacturing capabilities with its three North American CR-V production facilities to better align with customer needs and market conditions.
Reportedly, this change will now impact Honda’s overall production volume or employment. But its main rival, the Toyota RAV4, is still kicking butt. It sold 475,194 models in the United States in 2024.
