Depending on the state you live in, you might be allowed to keep a loaded firearm in your car. However, gun owners regularly make a mistakes that could result in an irritating, embarrassing, or even dangerous theft. And no, it’s not leaving their car unlocked. No, one of the worst safety mistakes drivers make with their guns is in the way they decorate their rides.

Gun owners may advertise their brand affinities or ideologies with decals and stickers– a big mistake

You can’t stop crime. But you can make yourself a lesser target for thieves and opportunists. Unfortunately, thieves steal firearms out of cars every day in the United States. Worse yet, those stolen guns may go on to support criminal activity in the future. As such, gun owners must ensure that their firearms are as secure as possible, especially those left in a car.

Still, some gun owners will advertise the presence of a firearm with decals and stickers. For instance, a motorist may brandish an “I don’t dial 9-1-1, I dial .357” sticker on their ride. While some drivers think it’s a stern warning to criminals, it’s also an indicator that they may have firearms on board.

Of course, it’s not just generic stickers and decals. Stickers emblazoned with the logos of popular firearm manufacturers like SIG, Glock, Smith & Wesson, and Ruger could indicate that you have a gun in your car. As such, thieves are that much more likely to break into your vehicle, weapon or not.

Consequently, the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) reminds drivers that stickers and decals can inform malicious parties. “CSP urges drivers to avoid putting anything from what school you or your kids attend, to frequented shopping retailers and even your favorite ski resort. All those can be used as an opportunity for thieves,” per KDVR FOX 31

Thieves may profile cars based on stickers and decals suggesting the presence of valuables. The same goes for firearm-related decals. While securing your firearm is the best way to prevent theft, advertising your firearms with decals is a welcome mat.
