It’s almost like something from the 2000 Nicolas Cage film, “Gone in 60 Seconds.” Car thieves show up, work their malicious magic, and disappear with someone’s hard-earned vehicle. In this case, a security camera captured the evildoers making off with a GMC Sierra pickup truck in just over one minute.

It didn’t take long for these Texas car thieves to get away with a GMC Sierra, and video captured the whole thing

Security camera footage shows a late-model GMC Sierra with a camper shell parked alongside a Toyota SUV in a suburban Texas driveway. Nothing out of the ordinary there. That is, until two car thieves with face masks approached the white pickup truck.

Moments after the duo came into view, they began working to unlock the Sierra’s driver-side door. It didn’t take long. They had the door open and were focused on starting the truck mere seconds later.

From there, one of the two thieves, clad in a hooded purple jacket, climbed into the driver’s seat and started the truck. One second, the lights were flashing. The next, the thief had started the GMC Sierra and was on his way as his partner jogged back to another vehicle outside of the camera’s view.

According to KPRC 2 in Houston, the owner didn’t exactly roll out the red carpet for the thieves. He locked the truck, left the driver’s side door in direct view of his security camera, and took his keys inside, far away from the truck.

But it wasn’t enough to dissuade the thieves. All in all, it took just 67 seconds from the thieves approaching the truck to pulling away.

This isn’t uncommon, either. An experienced car thief can steal a vehicle, in view of a camera or not, in less than 30 seconds. Alarmingly, thieves steal a car every 36 seconds in the United States.

So, what can you do? For starters, you can make yourself a difficult target. 80% of stolen vehicles aren’t even locked when thieves take them, per Tulane University. Lock your doors, store your keys away from your vehicle, invest in a tracker, and consider a killswitch or physical barrier, like a steering wheel club.
