Ford recalls 700k crossovers for engine fire risk
Ford Motor Company has been receiving reports of the fuel injectors in its Bronco Sport crossover’s turbocharged 1.5-liter I3 engines cracking. The result could be gasoline pouring all over a hot engine. Not good looks.
First, Ford tried to write a software patch to detect a broken injector, derate engine power, and warn the driver that their crossover was leaking fuel. But when it audited its recent recalls, it found many Bronco Sports that had been recalled, actually hadn’t had the software installed correctly. So Ford recalled 22,270 Bronco Sports all over again.
Ford’s optimistic first Bronco crossover recall
But hoping a software fix could solve a hardware problem was optimistic. And it was even more optimistic to hope that the Bronco Sport–which shares its engine with the Escape–was the only vehicle affected by the problem. And sure enough, here we are again.
Ford’s expanding its recalls numbered 24S16 and 22S73 to include 694,271 vehicles. This includes more Bronco Sport model years as well as the Ford Escape. Here’s the breakdown:
- 2021-2024 Ford Bronco Sport (with 1.5-liter I3)
- 2020-2022 Ford Escape (with 1.5-liter I3)
Ford isn’t aware of any accidents or injuries caused by this problem. This time around, it is openly calling the software patch an “interim repair” while it works on a longterm solution. That will likely be swapping out the faulty injectors. There is no Lincoln running this same engine, and this recall likely won’t expand to Ford crossovers ordered with the 2.0-liter I4.
