Ford Recalling Over 272,000 EVs and Hybrids Because They Must Just up and Roll Away
Ford Motor Company has announced a recall of tens of thousands of EVs and hybrids due to a rollaway risk. The recall affects over 272,000 electric and hybrid vehicles in the United States.
The recall includes 272,645 select 2022-2026 Ford F-150 Lightning, 2024-2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E, and 2025-2026 Ford Maverick models. Some of these models are experiencing a software glitch that could allow the vehicles to roll away unexpectedly.
The glitch is located in the integrated park module. In certain instances, it may fail to lock into the park position after the driver shifts the vehicle into park.
Ford says it estimates the parking function problem is present in only 1% of the vehicles being recalled. The company also reports that they are not aware of any accidents or injuries resulting from the glitch.
A total of 80,468 Maverick hybrids, 104,113 Lightning EVs, and 88,064 Mustang Mach-E models are being recalled. Ford did report that there have been numerous warranty claims filed by owners of those vehicles that may be related to the parking software issue.
Vehicle owners may contact Ford customer service at 866-436-7332 using recall number 25C69 for more information. There will be no charge to fix the problem. The company will also send out notification letters, which should begin arriving during the week of February 2, 2026.
Ford previously issued an Escape recall in December
Ford also recently recalled 108,762 Escape SUVs in the United States. Part 573 Safety Recall Report, issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), warns “liftgate hinge covers may detach from the vehicle while driving.”
That means that the hinge cover can detach while driving and “can create a distraction and/or road hazard for other road users, increasing the risk of a crash.” The NHTSA added “customers may notice the liftgate hinge cover is not fully seated (not flush with roof)” and/or “may hear wind noise and rattling noise as they drive.”
“For 2025 vehicles, detachment may result from loss of adhesion between DUAL LOCK attachment feature and the vehicle’s panoramic roof frame due to a supplier quality issue and potential contact between the vehicle’s liftgate and hinge covers during liftgate opening due to hinge covers being installed in an over-flush condition,” the NHTSA writes.
Ford is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries related to this issue. However, owners will be notified by mail to take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer. Repairs will be offered at no charge.
