What the frunk?! The 2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E is taking new steps to nickel and dime potential buyers. It used to promote having the standard front truck space that’s waterproof. Now it costs extra.

The 2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E charges extra for the frunk

As interest in electric cars continues to decline, it’s not exactly the best time to make controversial changes. But the 2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E just told us to hold its charging cable.

It’s not charging an extra $500 if you want to access the front trunk or frunk. If you want the extra cargo space, click the “Exterior Option” box upon ordering your SUV. This is a bit strange as the front trunk has been free for years.

Additionally, I’ve placed my groceries and other items in the front trunk while reviewing the Mach-E, and it definitely doesn’t provide $500 worth of extra space. The 4.8 cubic foot space is designed to hold small luggage, groceries, or muddy gear.

It has drainage holes so it can function as a portable cooler. However, I used the frunk of the Ford F-150 Lightning as a cooler at a tailgate party, and the ice melted incredibly quickly. This tracks as Ford shares that it’s not insulated.

The electric pony has an MSRP of $37,795. Plus, the $7,500 federal tax credit ended, so there’s no wiggle room or relief with the price.

With the standard-range model, you get an EPA-estimated range of 250 miles. The extended-range model provides up to 320 miles of range. AWD is available.

But this electric vehicle, like many other options, has been suffering from declining sales. It needs shocking changes to turn things around.
