Traffic came to a crawl in Joplin, Missouri, on May 16—and the reason was as shocking as it was impressive. The quiet town usually runs smoothly, with the occasional disabled car causing a slowdown. This time, however, it wasn’t a disabled car—it was a man towing a double-wide mobile home with an early 1990s Ford Expedition.

The driver had obviously overtaxed the Ford SUV, as double-wide trailers can weigh between 45,000 to 100,000 pounds. Its rear end nearly scraped the pavement while the front end pointed skyward.

The Ford crawled along at just 5 mph, dramatically slowing traffic. Its mismatched trailer wasn’t up to the job—one of its axles dragged along the pavement.

Even with the company’s optional tow package, a 4×4 Expedition from that era could tow no more than 8,900 pounds. You don’t have to be an expert with numbers to see that’s several times the Ford’s limit.

The Ford only made it a few miles before trouble caught up with it

According to KOAM‘s name-dropping of streets and Google Maps, the Ford made it a little over one mile before a tire blew in the rear. While the man was repairing the tire, state officials caught up with him.

He was reportedly heading to a new site near a church three miles down the road, and figured his trusty ol’ Ford could handle it. It didn’t. After he threw on the spare tire, the Ford made it for one more mile before giving out completely.

While he was waiting for a towing company to accept the job, he was cited by the Commercial Vehicle Inspectors for five violations totaling close to $3,000. Inspectors told him his load was too wide, too large, and was damaging the roadway.

In addition to the citations, he had to pay the only towing company that took the job to haul the mobile home the rest of the way.

Viewers, naturally, were very unserious

Seeing a Ford Expedition haul a double-wide mobile home, even if it was for a little over three miles, impressed many—as well as the man’s determination.

However, there were several out of the almost 1,200 commenters on KOAM’s video who couldn’t resist making a joke.

“When you’re under house arrest but you need to get more beer,” wrote a viewer.

Someone else made a joke about a potentially nasty divorce.

“When she tells you to hit the road but you ain’t letting take the house,” they joked.

Another said the drivers behind them should have known better (jokingly, of course).

“If the people behind him had simply looked through the bedroom window, they would’ve seen he had his hazard lights on,” they wrote.
