‘Of Course It’s a Ford Edge:’ Customer Brings Car to Shop. The Mechanic Can’t Believe What He Sees Underneath
A Ford Edge limped into BBL Automotive Repairs near Melbourne, Australia, with its transmission exposed beneath a shattered undercarriage, the victim of an apparent collision with what had to be a massive road obstacle.
The damage would be catastrophic for any vehicle, but what caught mechanics’ attention was the odometer reading: 316,000 miles on a Ford product, defying the brand’s reputation for unreliability.
In a funny TikTok video, Dom (@wrenchwithdom) has a Ford Edge at his shop in Wyndham City, a Melbourne suburb.
The text overlay reads, “Customer state car does not drive.” The videographer zoomed in on the broken undercarriage of a Ford Edge. It looks like the driver went over something that left the transmission exposed, with pieces of the undercarriage broken off.
In the video, the mechanics reveal the Edge has over 316,000 miles on it, which is pretty amazing for a Ford product, given its reputation. One of the pejorative sayings people offer is that Ford stands for “fix and repair daily.”
In the comments, people had jokes. “Good news, we can see your transmission has fluid. Bad news, we can see your transmission,” one person wrote. Aside from the jokes about the large whole, people were in wonder about the mileage.
One commenter wrote: “That many miles is unironically enough to drive to the MOON and some, so you could get to the moon, maybe get like 1/3 of the way back with that many miles? That thing is a TANK.”
Another person appeared unsurprised, saying, “Of course it’s a Ford Edge.”
Where Did Ford Rank In Reliability For 2025?
In Consumer Reports Annual Auto Reliability Survey, Ford ranked 11th out of 26 brands with a score of 48 points and was rated “average” overall. It is an improvement of four points and two positions from the previous year (13th place with 44 points).
As one might expect, Asian brands dominated the survey, taking 7 of the top 10 spots. But Ford did beat out Chevrolet (17th, 42 points), Cadillac (18th), GMC, Chrysler, Jeep, and Ram.
Ford did leap 10 spots up to 13th place in the 2025 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study. In fact, the brand’s trucks and SUVs, like the F-150 and Explorer, invariably rank among the best in their segments. So the “fix and repair daily” saying is quickly becoming a thing of the past.
Unexpected Returns Of The Ford Edge
For those who don’t have one, or have never considered a Ford Edge, get ready to have your door blown off. A well-maintained Ford Edge can exceed 200,000 miles with proper care, according to multiple dealership sources.
Now, it definitely depends on the generation and the owner. The earlier models (2007-2008, 2011-2013) had evaporative emission control (EVAP) system problems and electrical issues.
The average Ford Edge owner reports their SUVs pass 200,000 miles with minimal problems, and reaching 300,000 miles is not uncommon. One owner on a site: “I’ve had my 2015 Ford Edge for eight years, and it’s still going strong. The key is sticking to the maintenance schedule. No surprises, no headaches.”
One owner posted with a 2008 Ford Edge SE said he was “taking it to 300,000 and will decide from there if it will go any further,” adding they would “put money on it that it goes at least to 350,000 miles.” Another owner shared on Reddit that their 2012 Ford Edge with 248,000 miles is still going strong.
However, it’s not that unique compared to some other Ford models. Two Ford F-350 diesel trucks have gone over 1 million miles each— a 2000 model in Texas, and a 2013 model in New Mexico.
The common thread in all of these vehicles is maintenance and upkeep—or, in this particular case, in Melbourne, not running over large things.
This means keeping up with maintenance schedules outlined in the manual and keeping your tires maintained with regular rotations and alignments. Bonus points are awarded if you keep your vehicle clean and keep it in a garage or out of the elements.
