Florida’s new “Super Speeder” law, also known as House Bill (HB) 351, took effect in the Sunshine State at midnight on July 1, 2025. Now, more than two weeks later, police in the state are arresting motorists left and right for driving well over the speed limit. In fact, the new law sent a speeder to jail just two minutes after the regulation became enforceable.

Just two minutes after the new ‘Super Speeder’ law took effect in Florida, a man went to jail for going 104 mph in a 70 mph zone

Orange County, Florida. 12:02 a.m. HB 351 has been an enforceable state law for just two minutes. Sure enough, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office pulled a so-called “super speeder” over and put him in handcuffs.

His crime? The driver was traveling at 104 mph in a 70 mph zone. Now, according to the new law, police can arrest a driver for going 50 mph over the posted speed limit. 104 mph, while reckless on public roads, is 34 mph over the 70-mph highway speed limit.

But the law also permits the authorities to arrest a driver for any speed above 100 mph. So, presto: the excessive speeder earned a trip to jail. In short, the law turns excessive speeding from a traffic offense into a criminal charge.

That means up to 30 days in jail and a fine for a first offense. Subsequent violations can net up to 90 days in the slammer. Yikes.

Police also arrested a Cape Coral man for going 101 mph because he was ‘hungry’

More recently, a Cape Coral, Florida, man also ended up in handcuffs for violating the new excessive speeding law. According to FOX 4, 25-year-old Rood Kelly St Leger was traveling at 80 mph in a 50 mph zone. Fast, yes. But not a direct violation of the “Super Speeder” law.

The police officer who arrested St Leger claimed that the young driver accelerated to 101 mph before he was able to pull him over. St Leger pulled over and waited for the officer to question him.

When asked, the delinquent driver said he was speeding because he was “hungry.” You know the silly thing about fast food? You don’t have to drive very fast to get some.
