Imagine you leave your house for your morning commute, turn toward your van, and find a bear hanging out in your driveway. It might not be a huge shock if you live in Montana. But Florida? It turns out the Sunshine State has been struggling with bears recently.

Michael Tullos took to TikTok to post a bizarre Ring camera video. He stepped out the front door of his sunny Gulf Breeze home, turned the corner, and then dashed for the front door. Why? A bear is standing outside. After he slams the front door, the brave black bear wanders across his front yard.

“Moved about as fast as I could, seeing I was still in shock.” You can see the video embedded below:

East Coast black bears rarely pose much threat. But Tullos might have been so skittish because of a recent headline. In May 2025, a bear attacked and killed an 89-year-old man and his dog in Florida’s rural Collier County. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission calls it the state’s first deadly bear attack.

As a result, residents aren’t taking any risks. In September 2025, a Florida man shot a bear that wandered into this garage.

Florida controlled its bear population with a legal hunting season from the 1930s through 1994. It briefly reopened bear season in 2015, then closed it again. In late 2025, it opened bear season again, awarding 172 permits. After hunters harvested 52 bears, conservationists decided to close the season ahead of schedule. They estimate 4,000 bears call Florida home.
