“I left the keys in the cupholder,” the BMW owner lamented to the responding police officer. And while it sounds like a rookie move that would end in with his sports car in a chop shop, the empty parking spot was far from the end of it. This Ormond Beach, Florida 911 call pushed the limits of reality.

After taking down the description, deputies said they found a wrecked BMW convertible, a dazed driver, and apparently an attempted alien abduction.

The afternoon kicked off with a pleasant dog walk

A local parked his BMW at Bicentennial Park and left it unlocked with the key fob tucked inside a closed cupholder. He says he stepped away for about 45 minutes to take a stroll with his pup.

Deputies said that was long enough for someone else to slip into the driver’s seat and head out.

A witness later told investigators the man who approached the car looked confused. He had blonde, shoulder-length hair and kept asking for a light. The witness said the behavior made no sense for someone about to drive off in a luxury car.

A few minutes later, deputies said the BMW was flying down Old Dixie Highway at more than 130 mph

It didn’t stay upright for long. The car crashed near Plantation Oaks Boulevard and burst into flames.

Witnesses pulled the driver out before the fire grew. Body cam video later released by the sheriff’s office shows the driver, identified as 36-year-old Calvin Curtis Johnson, with a bloody face.

When the officer pressed him on how he ended up inside a stolen car, he repeatedly claimed he teleported into it

He also told the officer and witnesses that they had saved him from aliens.

The responding officer cuffed the man and pulled a fire extinguisher from his cruiser. The nearby landscape was still in flames, which he sprayed down.

First responders took him to a nearby hospital for treatment before deputies transported him to the Volusia County Branch Jail.

He faces charges that include grand theft of a motor vehicle and driving with a suspended license.

The sheriff’s office closed its report with a practical reminder: Lock your car, even on a quiet walk. You never know who might wander by with a story ready to take off at 130 miles per hour.
