22-year-old Florida man busted for speeding 105 mph in a 45 mph zone, violating the state’s new law
Florida isn’t messing around when it comes to excessive speeding. The Sunshine State’s new law cracks down on speeders by sending them right to jail for hitting triple-digit speeds or exceeding the posted limit by 50 mph or more. Recently, a police officer arrested a young driver for going way, way over the posted limit. And it wasn’t even the first time the department had arrested a motorist for wild speed under the new law.
A police officer in Central Florida arrested a reckless driver for speeding– 60 mph over the posted limit
Police in DeLeon Springs, Florida, arrested 22-year-old Anothy Handham for speeding. But this was no mere case of doing five or 10 mph over the posted speed limit.
According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, Handham was going 105 mph in a 45 mph zone when the officer “clocked” him with a velocity-detecting device like a radar gun. There’s no warning for that one.
As it sounds, Florida’s new “Super Speeder” law targets motorists who violate the posted limit by a considerable margin. In this case, the magic number is 50 mph over the posted limit. That, or any speedometer reading over 100 mph.
In this case, the 22-year-old Floridian hit 105 mph, exceeding the 100-mph threshold and going over the speed limit by 60 mph. Needless to say, Handham is in pretty big trouble.
It’s not even the first time that this sheriff’s office has made an arrest under the new law. In the body cam video below, a Volusia Sheriff’s Office deputy pulled over a motorcycle rider for hitting 120 mph on Interstate 95, where the posted speed limit may get up to 70 mph.
