Florida is a wild place. Every week, the headlines are flush with reports of alligator-related shenanigans and mind-blowing stories. And this Floridian clearly sought to keep the trend going. He managed to give the police the slip in a golf cart of all things before attempting to hide in some hedges. Oh, the desperation.

A Florida man managed to lose the cops for half an hour by taking off in a golf cart and hiding in the hedges

Police officers with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office descended on Bud N’ Mary’s Marina, an Islamorada fishing charter, with the intent of arresting one specific person. It was MIkel Christopher Hannan, a 35-year-old Tavernier, Florida man with multiple warrants to his name.

But Hannan had other plans. According to a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office social media post, “he fled from Deputies in a golf cart.” Not exactly the most high-performance getaway car.

Here’s the kicker: he succeeded. Well, at first. The MCSO says the errant Floridian eluded police, who “did not initially find him until approximately 30 minutes later when he was seen walking on U.S. 1 despite attempting to hide in the hedges.”

Perhaps Hannan played a few too many rounds of Grand Theft Auto. Needless to say, his attempts to hide in the hedges were ultimately unsuccessful. Police officers found the 35-year-old and carted him off to jail.

The MCSO says they charged him with resisting arrest in addition to the warrants for failure to appear (in court) and failure to comply.

Granted, Hannan was desperate to escape the authorities. But a golf cart might be one of the most ineffective means to escape a high-stress situation. Even the peppiest gas-powered golf carts don’t go much faster than 20 mph. In this case, however, it was enough to get Hannan away from his pursuers.
