Taco Bell has a bit of a reputation with late-night bites. People go drinking, and they crave some satisfying fast food. Boom, it’s Taco Bell time. However, it’s not a great idea to hop behind the wheel and try to hit the drive-thru after you’ve had a few. You might end up like an intoxicated Florida driver who fell asleep waiting for his food and then hit a parked car trying to leave.

Getting a DUI in a Taco Bell drive-thru has to be one of the most expensive fast food visits ever

Police in Brooksville, Florida, responded to a bystander call about a reckless driver. The caller told the authorities that he was following the erratic driver. After cruising the streets of Brooksville for a while, the DUI suspect pulled into a Taco Bell in search of fast food.

The driver, James Christopher Powell, fell asleep in the drive-thru. Powell wasn’t asleep for long, though. The Florida man stirred and collected his food from the drive-thru window. He’s got his food, and he’s awake (at least for a moment), so naturally, it’s time to head home. The good ideas just keep on coming.

But Powell had other plans, or a lack thereof, really. While attempting to slip out of the Taco Bell parking lot, he struck a parked car. Powell’s intoxicated jaunt through Brooksville was over. Fortunately, the police caught up with Powell shortly after he hit the parked car.

The authorities say they suspected Powell was on a controlled substance of some kind. That’s not hard to believe, either. Powell appeared out of it as a deputy conducted a field sobriety test. Police arrested him for a DUI, but he also had a no-bond warrant in another county at the time of the arrest, per Fox 13 Tampa Bay.

Now, Powell is in for it after his arrest. In Florida, a first offense DUI can carry up to $1,000 in fines and up to six months in prison. However, repeat offenses or high blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) can send a violator to prison for up to nine months. No amount of artery-clogging goodness is worth that kind of payment.
