‘It feels like driving over gravel’ Here’s how to fix this rough Chevy Silverado problem

It took multiple trips to the dealership to finally identify why this Chevy Silverado had a shudder.

Have you ever had a problem with your truck that dealership technicians just couldn’t solve? The Chevrolet Silverado could start riding rough for mysterious reasons. One owner is here to warn other owners about it, because it took multiple attempts to correctly diagnose his Chevy Silverado.

Here’s why your Chevy Silverado suddenly rides rough

TikTok user and Chevy Silverado owner @blaquemanmia is here to warn fellow truck owners about a unique problem that was frustrating to figure out.

If you are experiencing issues with your Silveraldo Truck. Have them check your transmission converter. There was 5 trucks ahead of me with the same problem. #chevroletsilveraldoltz #needtodoarecall #transmissionconverter #fixmytruck

His truck would suddenly start riding extremely rough, like he was constantly in gravel. He took his Silverado to the dealership multiple times in an attempt to diagnose and correct the problem.

Technicians repeatedly told him that nothing was wrong with the truck. So, he decided to go back one more time and ride along with the mechanic.

The mechanic immediately knew that the problem was related to the transmission converter slipping. So, if your truck is shaking be sure to have the transmission converter checked. Now his ride is back to feeling like a Cadillac.

I’ve reached out the blaquemanmia to see how his truck was repaired, if it was fixed, and how much it cost.

Does the Silverado have a transmission converter problem?

According to blaquemanmia, there were five trucks ahead of his with the same exact problem. There are several reports of torque converter problems listed in various forums.

I discovered a torque or transmission converter recall that Chevrolet issued in 2024. It includes 462,000 diesel trucks from 2020 – 2022. The converter may have transmission control module software that prevents the rear wheels from locking up.

While the recall is for the transmission, the actual problem is related to a defective transmission control valve. Also, multiple technical service bulletins recommend replacing the torque converter if drivers complain about shuddering and surging.

Fixing the problem involves updating the transmission control module software to monitor value performance.

How to tell if the transmission converter has problems

Your Chevy Silverado might have torque converter problems if you notice the transmission shuddering, a sluggish acceleration, transmission slipping, or delayed engagement.

You may also notice rough shifting between gears. Plus, a struggling torque converter creates friction that may cause the transmission to overheat.

According to Ralph’s Transmission, the problem could be related to worn-out clutch plates, contaminated transmission fluid, worn needle bearings, stripped internal splines, and using the wrong type of transmission fluid.

What do the comments say?

Many commenters interacted with blaquemanmia’s post. Some comments mentioned that Chevy trucks run great, others mentioned random issues like the air conditioning going out.

One person mentioned that this transmission converter problem is related to the eight and 10-speed automatic transmissions. Another asked if jumping RPMs is a symptom of the issue.

So at the end of the day, the torque converter problem does seem pretty common and Chevrolet has released information on how to repair the issue to prevent shuddering. However, maybe it needs to issue a recall.
