New York Firefighters Knowingly Buys $1.7M Truck That Won’t Fit in Garage
It’s pretty rare when I have to ask what firefighters were thinking. A department in New York bought a ladder truck that’s too tall to fit in the garage with taxpayer money. They knew it was too tall to fit in their garage. But now they’re shocked as it might not get delivered.
New York firefighters use taxpayer money to buy a truck that’s too tall
The Medina Fire Department in Ohio made a controversial purchase. When their ladder truck fell in disrepair, firefighters used $1.7 million of taxpayer funds to buy a new truck.
However, they knew it was too tall to fit in their garage and bought it anyway. It’s currently in Towanda, being worked on. The department hopes it can be delivered by the end of the month. However, it might be sold off instead.
The current firehouse has a doorway of 10 feet, 6 inches. But to fit the truck inside the garage, they need a bay with 13-foot doors. This would add to taxes. The department really wants to renovate the building to make the new vehicle work.
According to 13 WHAM, residents argue that the truck should be sold to avoid raising taxes. Without a ladder truck, the public risks facing longer waiting times for critical services during emergencies.
President of Medina Professionals Steven Miller shares that losing the rig would be heartbreak, disappointment, and disservice to the community. It’s an important piece of what we do and protecting our village.”
Some residents claim they won’t mind paying for the service. Fires are going to happen, and there are older homes and structures in the community. But why doesn’t the department buy something that fits in their garage?
