The FBI and police stop a fuel theft ring in California

The Greenfield Police Department partnered with multiple agencies, including the FBI, to put an end to an illegal fuel ring in Monroe County, California. Organized crime impacts multiple communities across the area.

Agencies partnered to serve search warrants in the East Bay at multiple locations in East Oakland, Richmond, and San Leandro.

According to CBS News, a stolen car and four firearms were recovered as officers discovered evidence of unregulated fuel storage and dispensing. One person is in custody in connection with the guns.

Police officers shared that organized fuel theft operations often involve the illegal resale of stolen fuel and pose serious public safety risks due to unsafe handling and storage of highly flammable materials. It’s being treated as a hazmat operation.

Also, these crimes are often connected to broader organized criminal activity. The statewide theft ring involved stealing fuel from multiple gas stations. Also, the police chief shared that officers discovered the operation by chance.

An arrest was made during one of several fuel thefts that led to uncovering the larger operation. The fuel was taken from gas stations overnight and then sold on the black market. The criminals were able to bypass the security features of pumps to access large quantities of fuel.

There is an ongoing investigation into the matter. However, police officers believe that they have a solid case with tons of evidence. Also, drivers are encouraged to report any suspicious activities seen at gas stations.
