EV brand issues recall over faulty brakes, not what you think
When you hear the term “electric vehicle,” you likely conjure images of the Tesla Model Y or Nissan LEAF. But the EV sector isn’t limited to four-wheeled entries. Companies like Zero produce clutch-free electric motorcycles for blasting around urban landscapes. But Zero isn’t without its issues lately, and the NHTSA just announced a recall for several of the brand’s MY 2024 bikes for potentially dangerous brake issues.
MY 2024 Zero EV motorcycles are being recalled for brake fluid leakage that could lead to crashes or fires
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a recall for electric motorcycles from California-based manufacturer Zero. According to the NHTSA, the recall cites a 180-degree twist in certain motorcycle models’ front brake hose assembly near where it connects to the ABS HCU.
The twist can lead to damage, which in turn can result in leaking brake fluid. The leaking brake fluid can lead to decreased braking performance. Anytime braking is impacted, the risk of a crash rises exponentially.
According to the NHTSA, “Brake fluid leaking can lead to a loss of brake pressure, preventing the front brakes from operating normally to slow the motorcycle. A loss of brake pressure could result in reduced vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.” In addition to a reduction in brake responsiveness, the leaking fluid poses a fire risk.
It’s a very small number of bikes
All in all, the recall impacts just 44 EV motorcycles. All of the motorcycles are from the 2024 model year and span the DS, DSR, DSRP, and DSR/X lines.
| Zero motorcycle model | Model year | Number potentially involved |
|---|---|---|
| DS | 2024 | 15 |
| DSR | 2024 | 9 |
| DSR/X | 2024 | 19 |
| DSRP | 2024 | 1 |
Owners can find the NHTSA safety recall report here. As for a fix, Zero Motorcycles will inspect the hose for twists and any resultant damage. Dealers will replace the impacted hoses free of charge.
