Malek, a homeowner in Dublin, California, was sitting in his living room when he heard a disturbingly loud boom coming from the front of his home. He stepped outside to see something he figured only happens in the movies: an elderly couple’s Toyota Camry was on top of his son’s Jeep Compass, and had crashed into his garage.

The crash was so intense, the Camry’s entire left side was on the Jeep’s roof, and the front end of the vehicle was stuck inside the garage. The elderly couple behind the wheel were baffled, and Malek immediately called 911. He’s not exactly sure how the couple launched the Camry in such a way that it ended up airborne, though.

“Pretty shocking, especially living in the cul-de-sac. Very shocking, yes. I don’t know, I think he stepped on the gas instead of the brake,” he told KGO.

More than anything, he’s glad no one was hurt—and will proceed with having everything fixed the old-fashioned way.

“I’m gonna call my insurance and his insurance, and we’ll take it from there,” he said.

Medical staff had to carefully remove the couple

When medical staff arrived, they were shocked, too. They couldn’t move the car without risking the couple, so medical staff helped get them out through the front window while the car was still suspended in the air.

The couple was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. Their conditions are unknown at the time of publication.

While an investigation continues, the couple’s Camry remains on top of the Jeep.

Viewers say the accident could have been prevented

Many of the outlet’s viewers felt that the accident could have been prevented if elderly drivers were held to stricter standards.

“Elderly people should not be behind the wheel! Really puts the public at risk!” wrote a viewer. “You’ve got to let it go at some point!”

Another said they were shocked a neighbor didn’t catch the accident on camera.

“I’m surprised there’s no footage with everyone having Ring cameras these days,” they commented.

Someone else said they could have used other services to keep them off the road.

“Elderly people should be using self-driving cars,” they wrote.
