Edmunds Claims These Are the Top 5 Affordable Cars and SUVs for 2026
As anyone who has shopped for a new car recently knows, the term “affordable” isn’t what it used to be. So when the car experts at Edmunds say they ranked the top five affordable models of cars and SUVs for 2026, keep that thought in mind.
Edmunds says about their rankings: “If you need a new vehicle and your budget is tight, check out this list of the best affordable cars for sale to help you get started on the right foot.” We’ll be the judge of that.
The cars and SUVs on this list of the most affordable for 2026 were selected by Edmunds based on metrics like base price, fuel economy, and safety ratings.
Small car: Honda Civic
Edmunds likes the Honda Civic LX sedan in the small car category. It has a starting price of $25,790 in 2026.
“A 150-horsepower four-cylinder engine supplies an EPA-estimated 36 mpg in combined city and highway driving, and this compact car earns favorable crash test ratings,” according to Edmunds.
Add in enough room for a family of four, the ability to upgrade to a hatchback with extra utility, and the option of a hybrid, and the Civic is their top choice among small cars.
Midsize car: Toyota Camry
The Toyota Camry, with a 2026 starting price of $30,195, is the best choice for people who want an affordable hybrid but think the Civic is too small, according to Edmunds.
“It’s the most popular car in America, for good reason,” says Edmunds. “Every Camry features an efficient hybrid powertrain that delivers an EPA-estimated 43-51 mpg, depending on the trim level. You can even equip the Camry with all-wheel drive for improved traction in the snow.”
The fact that the least expensive model, the Toyota Camry LE, still comes with driver-assist features and infotainment technologies makes it one of the best bangs for your buck.
Small SUV: Hyundai Kona
With a $26,950 starting price in 2026, the Hyundai Kona only costs a little more than the Honda Civic. However, the crossover offers many features a sedan does not, such as added utility, a higher ride height, and available all-wheel drive.
“In the small SUV segment, Edmunds recommends the 2026 Hyundai Kona,” Edmunds explains. “It’s one of the largest models in its class, the EPA says it averages 26-31 mpg depending on the trim level and drivetrain, and it boasts impressive crash test ratings.”
Edmunds also cites a long warranty and generous ownership perks as benefits of the Kona. They also like that a turbocharged four-cylinder is standard on higher trim levels and that an electric version is available.
Compact SUV: Kia Sportage Hybrid
The 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid has a starting price of $31,735. It makes Edmunds’ list for its stylish look and roominess. Another benefit is its turbocharged hybrid powertrain that gets an EPA-estimated 42 mpg combined.
“This year, Kia made numerous changes to the 2026 Sportage Hybrid, headlined by design updates and new technology,” Edmunds brags.
They also appreciate that the most affordable version, the LX, not only still provides most of the tech people want, but it’s also the most fuel-efficient of the bunch.
Midsize SUV: Hyundai Palisade
Yep, another Hyundai. The three-row Hyundai Palisade makes the list because of its upscale styling, an “artfully executed interior,” seating for up to eight people, and an available turbocharged hybrid powertrain. With a 2026 starting price of $41,035, the term “affordable” is certainly relative.
“Choose the base SE trim to keep prices in check (SEL for hybrids),” Edmunds writes. “But if you’re rethinking plans to buy a luxury SUV, a top-shelf Palisade Calligraphy is downright decadent in look, feel, and equipment.”
According to Edmunds, the Hyundai Palisade is “an affordable alternative to everything from an Acura to a Volvo.”
