Dump truck in Virginia falls off overpass in flames due to exploding tire

A dump truck driver was just trying to go to work in Suffolk, Virginia when he was involved in a chaotic accident. One of the truck’s tires exploded while he was traveling northbound on I-664.

According to state police, this caused the 20-year-old driver to lose control of the truck. He ran off the road, hit the end of the jersey wall, and flipped off the overpass into the 4400 black of Bridge Road. The truck’s axle was torn off during the chaos.

As the massive truck slammed into the pavement, it erupted in flames. According to WTKR, firefighters arrived to see the fuel leaking from the dump truck as the fire got worse.

Multiple Suffolk Fire & Rescue crews helped battle the blaze. Miracualy, the truck driver escaped without any injuries. Also, the Western Star truck was empty during the incident.

Due to the displacement of fuel and hydraulic fluid, the area is being treated for hazardous materials. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) managed lane closures in both directions for several hours.

Bridge Road is expected to be closed for an extended period of time. There are multiple detours put in place to help manage disrupted traffic. Also, there is an ongoing investigation into the incident.
