Drunk Michigan driver hits police SUV
The Brenton Township Police Sargent was out on patrol around 12:30 am when his routine shift turned deadly. He was involved in a wreck in the 110 block of Highland Avenue.
That’s where he was struck by a drunk driver. An intoxicated man was behind the wheel of a Dodge Charger when he suddenly lost control. He suddenly crossed the center line and hit the patrol car head-on.
Other police officers shared that the Sheriff was in a marked Ford Explorer. The driver’s side headlight and front bumper were damaged. Luckily, a grille guard provided some protection.
According to MLIVE, the driver of the Charger was identified as a 28-year-old Benton Township man. He was charged with operating while intoxicated and without a license.
The sergeant was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. He has been released, and the driver of the Dodge Charger wasn’t injured.
The report didn’t share the man’s blood alcohol content. However, 0.08% is the legal limit for driving under the influence. He may have been on other substances as well.
There is an ongoing investigation into the case. It will be forwarded for review by Berrien County prosecutors. However, this entire incident could have been avoided if the driver didn’t decide to drive drunk.
