Driverless garbage truck hits cars and homes in New Jersey neighborhood
A garbage truck went rogue in New Jersey, causing chaos in a New Milford neighborhood. Typically, these trucks are dangerous even with someone behind the wheel, but the one that smashed into cars and homes was driverless.
Milford police officers shared that a privately owned truck was conducting a garbage pickup on Eagle Avenue around 7:15 AM. The 46-year-old driver got out of the truck to assist with loading and claims that he put it in park first.
According to North Jersey, the truck engaged in drive mode without anyone inside. Then it started rolling down the road. Once the driver noticed that it was rolling away, he ran up to it, trying to get inside.
But the door was locked. It crashed into three parked cars and pushed one into a driveway. Other vehicles were pushed into a home.
The impact of cars slamming into the house shifted the gas meter, which firefighters later stabilized. Also, the home had minor structural damage, and no one was injured.
The driver received summonses for delaying traffic, leaving the vehicle with the engine running, reckless driving, and careless driving.
An average garbage truck weighs 33,000 lbs, and they can weigh up to 55,000 lbs. They can roll away with a lot of force.
