Driver tries to say “DD” but tells the police “I’m the DUI tonight”—arrested
There are slips of the tongue, then there are slips of the tongue. This poor driver was trying to tell police “I’m the DD”–as in designated driver. But he misspoke and said “I’m the DUI tonight.” He ended the traffic stop in handcuffs. But not because the police don’t have a sense of humor. His other actions made it clear that he was not a DD, at least not a very sober one. Here’s how it went down.
The police department in Marietta, California was cracking down on drunk drivers on New Years. When an officer stopped one motorist he asked where the man was driving. The motorist said, “I was just dropping off my friend because I’m the DUI tonight.”
The police officer managed to keep a straight face. But asked, “You’re the DUI tonight?”
The driver hadn’t realized his mistake. He doubled down. “Yes sir.”
The investigating officer finally asked, “Do you mean to say the DD?” The driver was speechless.
The officer had pulled the driver over when he saw his car swerving. So he asked the man if he’d been drinking. His answer was “A beer and some champagne a couple hours ago.”
When the police officer asked him to complete field sobriety tests, the man volunteered but was visibly unsteady. When the officer announced he was arresting the man for further investigation of a DUI the driver wasn’t happy. He protested that he was just “like two minutes away” from home.
The officer asked if the man knew the phone number of someone who could drive his car home. The man’s response:
“I don’t off my heart.”
