In an odd twist at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, a DoorDash driver managed to accidentally infiltrate restricted airport roads for an extended time before air traffic controllers noticed him (and his unapproved vehicle).

The incident unfolded around noon Saturday, when the 36-year-old driver, according to police, “accidentally” entered secured airport grounds. He continued driving through “sensitive” areas, possibly even near active runways, before someone in the control tower realized something wasn’t right.

Police confirmed this wasn’t a criminal act, but rather a seriously wrong turn on the DoorDash driver’s part

The man reportedly never posed a threat, and no charges were filed, CBS News shared. Still, the breach raised eyebrows in a facility where security is meant to be airtight.

O’Hare is one of the busiest airports in the world. With over 75 million passengers a year and a dizzying layout, it’s easy to see how someone unfamiliar could get overwhelmed. But most people stop short of driving alongside jets.

This isn’t O’Hare’s first brush with security scares. Just last month, a passenger was yanked from a United flight for bringing a concealed firearm onboard. In February, a private jet taxied into a Southwest plane’s landing path at Midway. And on Christmas Eve, a stowaway tragically died in the wheel well of a United flight bound for Maui.

Aviation experts say the DoorDash incident could have ended very differently. At night, headlights don’t tell you if it’s a catering truck or a confused Civic. That’s part of what alarms the aviation community.

DoorDash said it’s investigating the situation. As for the driver, he likely won’t be dropping off orders at O’Hare again anytime soon.
