This woman goes viral for using Comet Cleaner as a way to remove small scratches from her vehicle

Comet cleaner is traditionally used for cleaning up sinks, tubs, counter tops, and showers. However, a recent car hack trend has been circulating around TikTok on how Comet Cleaner can be used to remove small scratches.

In a TikTok that’s generated over 2.8 million views as of this writing, Laiya (@laiya.xo) tested out the Comet Cleaner car hack she discovered on TikTok and reports on how it did.

All You Need Is A Cloth, Comet Cleaner, and Water

“I saw a hack on TikTok that says that Comet Cleaner can take out buffs in paint. Well, we’ll see,” Laiya begins.

Laiya explains that all that is needed is a cloth, Comet Cleaner, and water. Following the instructions of the car hack, Laiya begins by wiping down the surface of where the scratches are located.

“This hack did not come from me, so don’t come for me,” she emphasizes.

She then grabs the cloth and a water bottle. Once the cloth is damp with Comet, Laiya starts wiping down the area where the scratches are located.

“Hold on, it’s disappearing. I don’t see it,” she yells.

Continuing to wipe down the area she is impressed how the scratches are disappearing. However, she did notice some of her paint is also getting taken off.

“It’s peeling some of my paint off,” she shares.

She still continues the process wiping down the car with water and the Comet rag.

“I think this works. This hack actually [expletive] worked. Wow. Who knew that Comet could take out scratches in your paint,” she concludes.

Commenters Chimed In On This Car Hack

Commenters were recommending to avoid doing this car hack as this hack will strip away the paint.

“You’re basically sanding down the paint. Don’t do this,” one TikTok commenter shared.

“I feel like that would make it worse because it’s basically liquid sandpaper,” another added.

“Be careful it might look great, but you are scratching the clear coat off your car that actually protects the paint from peeling. Don’t do this,” a third replied.

Laiya did conclude her video saying she’ll do a two day update which she did follow through on.

Can Comet Cleaner Take Out Scratches From Your Car’s Paint?

In the follow up video, Laiya revealed Comet Cleaner did not in fact work. After two days, the scratches reappeared.

“Should you actually try to hack on your car, No,” she reveals.

She then goes on to explain that there are actual products that do this and are much better to use.

“Apparently there are actual products to take out scratches in paint like buffers, and clays,” she shares.

After testing out this TikTok DIY car hack, she recommends using the products suggested by professionals.

“I think you guys should use those which are approved by actual detailers rather than trying a hack on TikTok like I did,” Laiya suggests.

She concludes the follow up by revealing the scratches reappearing on her car.

“I was hoping this would work,” one TikTok commenter shared.

“Comet is like a powder, it can make more scratches,” another added.

What Products Should You Use To Remove Scratches From Your Car?

After seeing what Comet Cleaner did, it’s best to avoid it when dealing with a scratch.

As Laiya suggests, there are actual products that specifically design to remove scratches from cars. These products include rubbing compounds, scratch removers, and eraser kits.

In order to determine which product will work best to remove the scratches, it’s best to know what type of scratch you are dealing with, Chemical Guys reports. There are four different kinds of scratches including clear coat, paint, primer, and deep scratches.

Once you identify what scratch your car has, it’s time to gather the necessary tools. Chemical Guys suggests having a scratch remover, microfiber towel, quality car wash, dual-action polisher, polish, and wax or sealant.

How Can You Remove Minor Scratches From Your Car?

Additionally, the Chemical Guys provided these steps to follow to remove the scratches from your car:

  1. Access The Scratch: Identify what kind of scratch you are working with. Run your fingernail along the scratch. If it’s smooth, it’s a surface-level clear coat scratch. If your fingernail gets caught up, it’s a deeper paint or primer scratch.
  2. Clean The Area: Use car soap and a microfiber towel and wash the scratched area to clear off dirt and debris. Pat dry to ensure the surface is smooth to work on.
  3. Apply Scratch Remover: Apply a small amount of scratch remover on a microfiber towel and get to work on the scratch. Use light circular movement on the scratch. Let the remover smooth out the scratches and blend into paint.
  4. Buff It Out: Use a microfiber towel and dual-action polisher to buff out the area with small circular motions. This will even out the area and removes excess product.
  5. Polish The Area: Add polish to a microfiber towel and apply to the area where the scratches were for a nice shine. The polish will smooth out the imperfections and the paint color a nice glow.
  6. Protect With Sealer or Wax: Hard work was put into making the scratches disappear. Cap of the process by adding a sealer or wax to preserve the repair.
