The Dodge Durango Gets Its V6 Engine Back to Reduce Prices
The Dodge Durango is one old SUV that refuses to die. But it can’t seem to get an update either. After cutting multiple options and trim levels, the Durango is reversing course. It’s bringing a V6 engine back from the dead to become more affordable.
The 2026 Dodge Durango revives its V6 engine
You may have noticed that the Dodge Durango is an expensive SUV. That’s because it was only offered with the HEMI V8 engine for a few months during 2025.
Stellantis felt like enough drivers would agree to pony up more for the 5.7-liter V8 HEMI with 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. Of course, some people didn’t hesitate to go for the Supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 SRT Hellcat engine with 710 hp and 645 lb-ft of torque.
However, drivers made their intentions clear. Now the 3.6-liter V6 engine with 295 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque is back due to popular demand.
Now the entry-level Durango is $3,700 cheaper than before. It now starts at $38,995. However, the V8 engines come with standard AWD, which is a nice perk. Adding AWD to models with the V6 engine costs about $40,995. So, it’s an available option for $2,000.
Despite not having a significant refresh since 2011, it’s not exactly struggling. According to CarBuzz, even with only offering V8 engines, sales are up 16% year-over-year.
Perhaps offering a slightly more affordable engine that should be a bit better on gas will help the dinosaur continue its success. But this decision could be temporary based on how buyers react.
