1 Half-Ton Detroit Truck Lasts Longer Than a Toyota Prius
The analysts at iSeeCars pour over the registration data of 174 million cars to rank the makes and models most likely to hit 250,000 miles. In this year’s annual light-duty rankings, the Toyota Prius had a 12.2% chance of hitting 250,000 miles, and the Honda Civic had a 10.9% chance. But the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 beat them both with a 12.9% chance of hitting 250,000 miles. Chevy’s half-ton took the #13 spot. That said, it doesn’t come close to the longevity of General Motors’ heavy-duty trucks. Here are the rankings.

| 5 | Lexus IS | 27.5% |
| 6 | Toyota Tacoma | 25.3% |
| 7 | Toyota Avalon | 18.9% |

| 14 | Toyota Highlander | 12.7% |
| 15 | Toyota Prius | 12.2% |
Toyota and Lexus vehicles swept spots 1-9. Honda also had a strong showing. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is the first vehicle from the Detroit Three on this light-duty list. General Motors did very well, with the Suburban landing at #16 and the GMC Sierra 1500 claiming #18. Obviously, the powertrain underpinning all three of these vehicles is one of the most durable around.
Both Toyota and Lexus have cultivated a reputation for building reliable and durable vehicles. These numbers prove the Toyota reputation for reliability is warranted. But there’s no way to tell if its reputation becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy: The reputation drives high resale values, which make maintaining a high-mileage Toyota a sound investment. That may mean more of them stay on the road.
How long do heavy-duty trucks last?
iSeeCars doesn’t include heavy-duty trucks in its rankings of the makes and models most likely to hit 250,000 miles. That’s because these rigs are in a class of their own. Take, for example, the Ram 3500, which has a 39.7% chance of seeing 250,000 miles. That makes it over three times as likely to see that mileage as the relatively reliable Toyota Prius.
In fact, all of the Detroit Three make a heavy-duty truck that has a better shot at 250,000 miles than a Toyota Prius.
Average heavy-duty truck mileage figures may be skewed because so many of them are bought and punctually maintained by fleet operators. In this way, they may have more in common with a million-mile city bus than your regular commuter car. Here are the ten pickup trucks with the best shot at ultra-high mileage.
