Some dealership stories are strange. This one is baffling. And now there’s a new chapter in the tale of the Florida dealership charging a 21-year-old for a Jeep it never actually owned.

Christian Mobley decided to splurge on his next vehicle. He went to Miami Auto Mall and bought a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT.

The SUV packs the 392-cubic-inch Hemi V8 from Dodge Scat Pack models. It can sprint to 60 mph in about 4.4 seconds. Mobley agreed to a $29,730 out-the-door price, which is reasonable for the eight-year-old performance SUV. He appears to have used in-house financing.

Dealership asked for the SUV back for ‘inspection’

Two weeks later, the dealership contacted Mobley and asked him to bring the Jeep back. Staff told him the SUV needed a “rebuild inspection.”

That raised red flags. The explanation suggested the vehicle had a rebuilt title. It also means the dealership claimed it had failed to verify the work. But the truth was even worse.

Mobley grew suspicious. He placed a tracking device in the Jeep and returned it for service. He then watched the SUV get transported to Miramar, Florida.

When Mobley contacted the police, they told him there was an open case involving the vehicle. Miami Auto Mall had allegedly returned the Jeep to a prior owner because the dealership had never paid that owner for it.

Meanwhile, Mobley continued making payments on a Jeep he no longer possessed.

Miami Auto Mall finally responds

Mobley shared his story with Local 10 News. Reporters visited the dealership to ask questions. The dealership responded by calling the police.

It remains unclear what Miami Auto Mall planned to do. Did it sell an SUV that was still tied up in a dispute? Was it hoping to resolve the issue quietly after Mobley took out a loan? Were they planning to find a second Jeep and hoping Mobley wouldn’t notice? The answers remain unknown.

The dealership later texted Local 10 News documents showing Mobley received a full refund. Its only statement said, “Miami Auto Mall are good people always aiming to do the right thing.”
