The compact Toyota truck is officially gunning for the Ford Maverick
You’ve probably heard rumors about Toyota building a compact truck to battle the Ford Maverick. But the issue is that it was a rumor. However, now a new Toyota truck has officially been confirmed, and it will slot under the Tacoma.
A tiny Toyota truck is really happening
Get excited, because a tiny Toyota truck is really coming to fight the Ford Maverick. After years of rumors and speculation, there is finally concrete evidence to obsess over.
Toyota North America Head of Planning and Strategy, Cooper Ericksen, shared that the truck is being built. He explained that decisions have been made, and the question is when it can be slotted in. It’s not a matter of ‘if’ at this point.
This new compact truck doesn’t have a name yet. However, it will be an entry-level model. According to MotorTrend, Toyota estimates that it could sell 100,000 to 150,000 models a year. Meanwhile, the Ford Maverick sold 131,142 units in 2024.
It’s also borrowing from the Mavericks’ playbook. The mystery pickup will have a unibody construction and will ride on a variant of the TNGA architecture. Plus, it will have a hybrid powertrain.
Previous rumors suggest that it will be based on the Toyota RAV4 or Toyota Corolla Cross. The Maverick is based on the Ford Escape. Also, it could look like a baby Tacoma with similar capabilities to the RAV4.
We might not see it until the fall of 2027. However, it sounds like it’s already in the works. I’m hoping for it to enter production in 2026.
