Cigarette Butt Caused Bronx Car Explosion That Sent 7 FDNY to the Hospital
Flames suddenly erupted on a Bronx street Wednesday night when a parked car ignited in a rolling, fiery cloud. The blast burned seven FDNY firefighters.
FDNY were responding to a small garbage fire in front of a Bronx building when the situation worsened
The smoldering trash caught fire and spread to a nearby parked car, which ignited its gas tank.
The resulting explosion shot a massive fireball into the night sky. Someone in the neighboring building caught the event on video as towering flames and thick plumes of smoke sent residents running for safety.
Seven FDNY firefighters were injured. Five suffered serious burns to their arms and faces. They were taken to Jacobi Hospital.
Chief of Department John Esposito reported that none of the injuries were life-threatening, and that all should make a full recovery.
FDNY Fire Marshals later confirmed that the chain reaction began with the cigarette butt
Flames from the discarded cig spread quickly through the nearby trash before reaching the car.
The aftermath left a hollowed-out vehicle frame and a sidewalk littered with burned debris.
Esposito used the incident as a reminder to New Yorkers to properly extinguish their cigarettes before discarding them.
The fire was fully under control by 8:19 p.m., about an hour after it began, preventing any civilian injuries.
City officials urge locals to stay vigilant and handle flammable materials responsibly…especially near trash and parked cars.
