When we buy a new truck or car, we don’t count on being totaled as soon as we drive off the dealership lot. In 2023, a man in the Newfoundland & Labrador providence of Canada, proudly bought a brand new Chevy Silverado 1500 Z7I (costing between $35,600 to $70,100 in America) for work and personal purposes.

He drove the truck home, giddy about his new truck. However, that would all change in less than one day. He ended up going semi-viral on TikTok when he reposted a video of his totaled truck, courtesy of one of the thousands of moose that cross Canadian roads daily.

The crash bent the hood, badly damaged the area near the radiator, and nearly caved in the front bumper. Some commenters claimed the truck would be fixed easily, while others expected insurance to handle the costs. Most hoped he had a gap insurance policy.

“When you hit a moose with your brand new truck that was less than 24 hours old,” the TikToker wrote over the video. “I guess that ceramic coating doesn’t repel moose. And this video is three years old.”

Viewers shared stories of their cars being totaled

The video was posted on May 3 and earned 35,000 likes, 568 comments, and was shared 722 times. Many of the comments were from other drivers who experienced their new car becoming totaled shortly after buying it.

“I bought one brand new truck, and I made it four miles from the lot before someone ran a stop sign and T-boned me at 60 miles per hour,” they wrote. “It was my sign never to buy new.”

Another said it took two days before their new car was totaled.

“Two days after I bought my only new vehicle for my birthday, I got rear-ended by some girl on her phone while I was trying to turn left at an intersection,” their comment read.

A woman commented that she didn’t even make it off the dealership’s property before someone hit her.

“I got rear-ended in front of the dealership once,” she wrote. “I didn’t even get 100 yards away.”
