Looking for the cheapest used cars in America? WA might have you covered
Car buying is tricky. From scarcity to bloated prices, finding and securing your perfect ride can feel hopeless. However, if you’re looking for the cheapest used cars in the country, you might want to check the Evergreen State.
Recent data suggests that Washington has the cheapest used cars in the country by nearly $2,000
A nationwide analysis of nearly 69,000 used cars revealed that Washinton State has the cheapest used cars in the country. The average cost of a used car in the state is $24,672, per OnFocus. Incidentally, Washington’s average used car cost is around $2,000 cheaper than the No. 2 most affordable state for used vehicles, Ohio.
| State | Average used car cost |
| Washington | $24,672 |
| Ohio | $26,605 |
| Virginia | $27,043 |
| Pennsylvania | $28,085 |
| Indiana | $28,213 |
Conversely, Alaska is the priciest state for car buyers seeking to pick up a pre-owned ride. On average, the state’s car shoppers will have to contend with used car prices of around $35,486. That’s more than $10,000 more than car buyers in the Evergreen State.
The Last Frontier is challenging for cars in multiple facets. For starters, Alaska’s remote location compared to the rest of the continental United States (CONUS) makes shipping used cars in and out of the state difficult. Moreover, getting parts to keep older models running can be tricky.
Interestingly enough, Yahoo!Finance had a completely different take on the cheapest states for used cars. Earlier this year, the site ranked Oregon as the most affordable state for pre-owned vehicles, citing the state’s lack of sales tax. Furthermore, they ranked Alaska among the most advantageous states for buyers due to the state’s lower-than-average dealer fees.
So, dear reader, what can you do as a used car buyer? First, shop around for the best deal possible. Consider widening your search parameters to include cars further away from home. Keep in mind that while you may save some money on factors like dealer fees, you may spend more on shipping or traveling to collect that perfect used car find.
