Celebrity singer in hot water for killing taxi driver in DUI hit-and-run
The celebrity DUI isn’t a uniquely American thing. In a recent and horrifying case, a celebrity singer in the Taiwanese city of Keelung slammed into a taxi cab, mortally wounding the driver. Worse yet, the young musician fled the crash scene without so much as checking on the taxi driver.
Taiwanese celebrity singer Kui is in serious trouble after killing a taxi driver in a DUI hit-and-run crash
26-year-old Taiwanese singer Kui was drinking from 12:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. That’s enough to push just about anyone past buzzed or tipsy and well into drunk country. But the celeb’s next move is what took the early morning from sloppy to straight-up criminal.
Kui got behind the wheel, hoping to drive to a friend’s place in the city of roughly 363,000. Now we have the formula for yet another celebrity DUI. However, Kui did more than drunkenly swerve across lanes of traffic. He speared into a stationary taxi cab, injuring Lee, the Keelung taxi driver.
According to Focus Taiwan, emergency services transported Lee to a hospital, where medical professionals conducted surgery after surgery. Unfortunately, their efforts proved unfruitful, and Lee died.
Troublingly, authorities say the celebrity fled the scene of the DUI wreck, failed to call the emergency services, and neglected to render first aid to Lee or the cab driver’s nearby associate. Now, Kui is facing trial for the hit-and-run killing, including a panel of six “citizen judges.”
Needless to say, the celebrity singer is looking at some serious repercussions for the DUI hit-and-run. In Taiwan, allowable blood alcohol concentrations are lower than they are in most US states. Specifically, Taiwan defines anything above 0.03% BAC to be drunk driving. That’s less than half the typical US standard of 0.08%. Moreover, drunk driving crimes that result in manslaughter can carry a maximum sentence of life in prison, per the TBAF.
