This story feels methed up! All puns aside, a few United States Customs and Border Control officers made a massive bust to help keep American streets clean.
A semi-truck hauling a load of lettuce was crossing the Texas border as normal in traffic when authorities at the Pharr International Bridge noticed a few irregularities.
Using non-invasive inspection technology, the greens in the trailer looked off. So the truck was sent for a secondary inspection.
Upon a physical search, they discovered 500 packages of methamphetamine hidden in the salad leaves. The discovery was made just days before Thanksgiving!
It sounds like something straight out of Breaking Bad, but Walter White isn’t involved this time. The 1,153 lbs of narcotics worth over $10.3 million were carefully packed to look like standard lettuce shipments.
According to CBP, the illicit cargo and semi-truck were immediately seized by the CBP’s Office of Field Operations. Homeland Security initiated a criminal investigation into the incident.
Port Director of the Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzaldus, Carlos Rodriguez, shared that within a shipment of salad greens, frontline officers found contraband that doesn’t belong on the holiday table.
Plus, this seizure aptly illustrates that officers’ use of tools and technology was instrumental in this massive takedown of hard narcotics.
