New Studies Reveal Which Car Brands and Used Cars Are the Cheapest to Insure
One thing people often overlook when purchasing a car, whether new or used, is the cost of insurance. Two new studies, which analyzed over 90 million real-world insurance quotes, reveal which car brands and which used cars are the cheapest to insure.
In most cases, the more expensive the car, the more expensive the car insurance will be. But, as these studies show, that is not always the case.
As Consumer Reports points out, there is more to the cost of owning a car than just the monthly payments. Car insurance, maintenance, and repairs can often significantly increase the overall cost of ownership. That’s why it is essential to have a general understanding of what you are getting yourself into when you purchase a car.
The cheapest car brands to insure
According to one of the studies conducted by insurance comparison website Insurify, the cheapest car brands to insure right now are as follows (based on average annual premium):
- Subaru: $2,088
- Buick: $2,148
- Volvo: $2,184
- GMC: $2,184
- Mini: $2,208
- Jeep: $2,268
- Mazda: $2,292
- Ford: $2,340
- Chevrolet: $2,376
- Honda: $2,376
The cheapest used cars to insure
In the second study, Insurify examined the cost of insuring used cars. With sales of used cars steadily on the rise, largely due to the increasing cost of buying a new car, it is essential to understand the cost of insuring them.
It is essential to note, however, that, as Consumer Reports explains, used cars may be relatively inexpensive to insure; however, some of the vehicles on this list have low reliability and owner satisfaction scores.
According to Insurify’s study, the top 10 cheapest used cars to insure are as follows (based on average monthly quote):
- Subaru Forester: $147
- Subaru Outback: $151
- Honda Odyssey: $155
- Dodge Grand Caravan: $158
- Toyota Sienna: $160
- Honda CR-V: $160
- Ford Ranger: $163
- Chevrolet Trailblazer: $164
- Jeep Liberty: $164
- Hyundai Santa FE: $166
Of course, there are other factors that affect the cost of insurance besides the make and model of your vehicle. Considerations such as your driving record, age, location, and credit score are also taken into consideration. So it is best to request quotes from your insurance company before making any final decisions.
