German automotive supplier Capricorn is getting into the hypercar business. Recently, at the Salon Retromobile in Paris, they debuted their new $3.5 million 01 Zagato prototype.

Capricorn is a high-performance automotive supplier specializing in lightweight components, carbon fiber, and engine parts for motorsports and luxury OEMs. They supply teams in Formula 1, LMP1, the World Endurance Championship, and other racing series and events such as Le Mans and Dakar.

What’s under the hood (and all-carbon-fiber monocoque body)?

The Capricorn 01 Zagato hypercar, made in collaboration with Zagato, the Italian coachbuilder, will be hand-built in Germany. However, a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine originally sourced from Ford will power it. So it will be influenced by Germany, Italy, and America.

Capricorn says the completely analog 01 Zagata will produce around 900 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque, weigh less than 1,200 kg (around 2,645 pounds), and boast a 0-100km/h (0–62 mph) acceleration time of less than 3.0 seconds with a top speed of 360 km/h (224 mph).

The mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive hypercar also features a five-speed manual transmission – a rarity in a hypercar today. A manually selectable Comfort, Sport, and Track driving modes, Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, and a double-wishbone, pushrod suspension system featuring Bilstein EVO R weight-optimized dampers, should provide exceptional driving comfort and performance.

“The Capricorn 01 Zagato represents the culmination of everything we have learnt from decades of pioneering ultra-lightweight materials, technologies and construction techniques,” Capricorn CEO Robertino Wild said in a statement. “This car is a showcase of Capricorn’s comprehensive capabilities. It demonstrates precisely what Capricorn can do when it combines all of its different technologies and skills to engineer, develop, and build an entire car.”

Capricorn will limit the 01 Zagato hypercar to just 19 units. That number is a tribute to Zagato’s founding on April 19, 1919.
