Burglary Suspects in California Abandon U-Haul, Crash Getaway Car During High-Speed Chase
Burglary suspects led police on a wild chase across Los Angeles last week. First, they tried to evade police in a U-Haul. Mid-chase, they abandoned the box truck and jumped into a different getaway car.
At various points during the ensuing high-speed chase, two of the suspects jumped out of the car. Police eventually stopped the getaway driver when another vehicle broadsided the car while driving through an intersection.
The whole thing began around 4:40 a.m. near a warehouse, where several suspects wearing ski masks were allegedly loading a U-Haul with stolen items. The Los Angeles Police Department reported they were loading marijuana products into the U-Haul.
When police arrived at the scene, the burglary suspects took off, dumping some of the stolen marijuana products out of the U-Haul’s open rear cargo door. Around 5:20 a.m., they abandoned the U-Haul and got into a car that continued to evade police.
The getaway car reportedly reached a speed of 100 mph as police pursued it
During the chase, the getaway car reportedly made dangerous turns through surface streets with its headlights off and nearly hit early-morning drivers on the 405 Freeway, according to ABC 7 News. NBC 4 News reported that the suspects side-swept an LAPD unit.
“He’s doing 90 on a side street, which is just insane,” KTLA News reporter Chris Schauble said during the chase.
The getaway car ran a red light and was hit by another vehicle, causing it to spin out. One suspect then ran from the car, leading police to search on foot. Video captured the suspect climbing fences and running through yards.
One resident of the area told NBC 4 News that she saw the getaway driver hop the fence and run into her yard past her home’s kitchen window.
“I turned to my wife, and I was like, ‘He’s in our yard,’” Reed Stillwell described.
The Los Angeles Police Department reported that they had detained two people in connection with the burglary and were hoping to use facial recognition to identify the remaining suspects.
