Audi recalls nearly 90k crossovers for engine fire risk
Audi just dropped what you might call a smoking gun. The latest Volkswagen Group recall affects 2022–2024 Audi Q5 Quattro and Q5 Sportback Quattro SUVs. A whopping 89,417 vehicles are caught up in this hot mess.
According to the NHTSA, the problem starts in the engine bay. The cylinder head covers, to be precise. “The screws can loosen, allowing oil to leak and increasing the risk of a fire.” Volkswagen Group’s recall report admits the screws might’ve been “improperly tightened” at the factory.
Audi explained, “Over time, the cylinder head cover screw(s) may loosen.” Seeping engine oil can build up residue without you noticing. Then if the exhaust gets that sticky mess hot enough, it can ignite and “a fire could occur.”
From drips to drama: how your ride might roast
Audi admitted early leaks are tough to catch. But when things escalate? “An unpleasant odor may be noticed and/or smoke may appear in the engine compartment.” That’s your cue to pull over.
Audi said it’s working on a fix. But admitted a “repair not yet available,” which is not what drivers want to hear. Until then, any related work “cannot be billed/claimed against the recall.”
In May 2024, Audi “optimized the process in production.” But the damage was done. They’ve received “2,539 potentially related warranty claims” and “eleven (11) potentially related thermal event cases.” Does “thermal event” mean smoke? Fire? It’s unclear. But thankfully, “Audi is not aware of any deaths or injuries due to this topic.”
