We’re well over halfway through 2025. And unlike five years ago, just about every domestic legacy truck maker offers an electrified pickup truck. But availability doesn’t mean popularity, and Americans aren’t exactly lining up for EV trucks.

Soft sales point to a lack of interest in electric trucks from Americans

The electric pickup truck market has options. The Ford F-150 Lightning, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Rivian R1T, and Tesla Cybertruck, just to name a few.

But even with electrified versions of popular pickup trucks, Americans aren’t biting. For instance, the Ford F-150 Lightning, the best-selling EV truck on the market, made up just 13,029 units in the first two quarters of 2025.

Compared to the non-electric F-Series, the F-150 Lightning is a straight-up sales flop. In the first six months of 2025, Americans bought a staggering 399,819 F-Series trucks. So, while F-Series truck sales increased by 17% in the first half of 2025, F-150 Lightning sales plummeted by that same 17%.

And that’s the best-selling EV truck. The Tesla Cybertruck, on the other hand, sold a total of just 10,712 units by the end of Q2 2025. That’s a 7.3% drop year-over-year. The same goes for the Chevrolet Silverado EV and Rivian R1T, which accounted for just 5,439 and 3,479 units, respectively.

RAM said ‘nope’ to the whole thing

RAM, on the other hand, cited the segment’s softening sales for its decision to kill its full-size electric pickup truck altogether. The automaker discontinued plans to make its so-called REV recently.

However, instead of killing its name as well, RAM kept the moniker. RAM still plans on producing a full-size plug-in hybrid pickup truck. And, rather than sticking with the historic “Ramcharger” name, RAM will call the PHEV pickup the REV.
