‘Then You Get Termination’: Amazon Delivery Van Hijacked, Crashed
Amazon delivery driver Gabriel Tapia was in for a Black Friday fright. He was hustling to finish hundreds of deliveries still left in his shift. He parked his van, hopped out, and then heard a sound behind him.
“Somebody was in the van waiting.”
Police have not disclosed who was inside the van, how they got aboard, or how long they had been hiding. It appears the suspect simply waited for the driver to turn his back.
“So as soon as I stepped on the van, they turned it on, and they put it on drive.”
Tapia was not about to cling to a moving van to protect a few Prime packages. “As soon as that happened, I just jumped out because I was thinking about my life.”
Crash followed just blocks away
Tapia heard a crash and ran after the van to see what happened. Just a couple of blocks away, the suspect smashed into three parked cars. One victim told NBC Los Angeles the collision completely destroyed their vehicle’s rear end.
“I never missed a day, and I love my job. Now this happened. You get the van stolen, then you get termination.” He added, “It sucks because I have a family. I don’t know what’s going to happen next.”
No one was injured during the incident. The LAPD has the van in custody as evidence and has not released the suspect’s identity. Police have not announced a motive. Investigators have not said whether this was a crime of opportunity or a targeted attempt to steal Black Friday packages.
Amazon has not said whether Tapia will lose his job. The company said delivery drivers’ safety during deliveries is its top priority.
