93-year-old British woman gets her life-long dream of riding in a police car
For many people, a ride in a police car doesn’t sound so great. For others, it’s a dream. 93-year-old Faith Whitaker falls into the latter camp. She’s dreamt of being a police officer for decades. Of course, that dream included time spent behind the wheel of a patrol car.
Now, while 93 is a bit outside the hiring criteria for the department, the Lancashire Police was happy to oblige and make Whitaker’s dream a reality. One of Lancashire’s neighborhood policing teams jumped on the task, claiming it would be “fantastic” to put the elderly British woman in the passenger seat of a police car.
An eager daughter hooked her elderly mom up with a long-coveted ride in a police car
Faith Whitaker loves the police-themed television shows in the UK. Drop in on the 93-year-old British woman and you might find her watching “Police Interceptors.” It’s flashing emergency lights, high-speed police work, and real stories of crime and justice. Whitaker loves the stuff.
However, Whitaker didn’t become a member of the police in her native Cumbria. Around 30 years ago, she moved to Rossendale. But her affinity for the police remained. Whitaker was understandably excited for a ride around her Helmshore neighborhood in a blue-and-yellow police car. “I’ve been looking forward to this, and I had a great time being out and about with the officers,” Whitaker said of the ride.
Police Community Support Officer (PSCO) Keely Dermody echoed Whitaker’s enthusiasm. “When we were told that it was her dream to be taken out in a police car we knew we wanted to make it happen,” PSCO Dermody told the BBC. “She was super excited to be able to get the opportunity, as she’s always wanted to be a police officer, and her daughter was thrilled we were able to give Faith the chance to live out her dream”.
To top it all off, the Lancashire Police outfitted Whitaker in a professional-looking police kit. She wore a reflective yellow jacket with the word “POLICE” emblazoned on the front. Better yet, the neighborhood policing team put her in a little hat with the characteristic UK police checkerboard pattern. Now she looks ready for a spot on “Police Interceptors.” “Thank you so much to all of you for making my day,” Whitaker told the police officers.
