5 hybrid cars with the best fuel economy for 2025
Gas prices are volatile. American EV charging infrastructure isn’t up to the standard of European road networks. Just two of the reasons automakers are producing more hybrids as car buyers opt for gas-electric platforms. But not every hybrid is capable of over 50 mpg on highways and city streets. These five, however, are some of the cars with the best fuel economy on the market.
These five hybrids are among the cars with the best fuel economy out there– and they all get 50 or more mpg combined
15 years ago, a hybrid was more of a statement than it was a popular alternative to gas-powered staples. Today, however, nearly every legacy automaker makes at least one hybrid. Better yet, some of the best cars on the list have fuel economy figures at 50 mpg combined and beyond.
- 2025 Toyota Prius- 57 mpg combined, $29,485 starting
What was once a punchline in jokes about unfashionable rides is, dare I say, cool. But the new Toyota Prius is more than a refreshed face, it’s one of the cars with the best combined fuel economy out there. If you drive carefully, Toyota says the Prius can return 57 mpg on the highway and 56 mpg on city streets.
- 2025 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Blue- 54 mpg combined, $26,645 starting
If fuel-sipping were a discipline, the 2025 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Blue would have a doctorate in it. With its hybridized 1.6L inline four-cylinder engine, the Elantra Hybrid Blue’s EPA fuel economy figures are 58 mpg on the highway and 51 mpg in the city. However, fuel economy figures drop in the posher Elantra Hybrid SEL Sport and Hybrid Limited trims.
- 2025 Kia Niro LX- 53 mpg combined, $28,385 starting
For 2025, Kia makes the Niro as an EV, a hybrid, or a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). And the crossover’s mpg figures establish it as one of the cars with the best fuel economy on the market. Even with the extra ride height, Kia says the Niro LX trim is capable of 53 mpg on city streets and 54 mpg on the highway.
- 2025 Toyota Camry LE- 51 mpg combined, $29,835 starting
The Toyota Camry is a hybrid-only affair for 2025. And the fuel economy figures agree with Toyota’s midsize workhorse car. At the entry-level LE trim, the Camry’s hybrid 2.5L inline four-cylinder platform can return 53 mpg in the city and 50 mpg on the highway. That is, if you drive carefully. You can read my review of the newly refreshed Camry here.
- 2025 Toyota Corolla Hybrid LE- 50 mpg combined, $24,960 starting
Rounding out the list and continuing the trend of Toyota’s dominance in the 2025 hybrid segment, the Toyota Corolla Hybrid manages to get a commendable 50 mpg combined. However, that figure is just for the Hybrid LE trim. Higher trims, like the Hybrid SE, drop fuel economy to 50 mpg city and 43 highway.
